En entrant dans la finale de cette soirée, il n’était question que des 4 Grands ((Dungey, Reed, Stewart et Villopoto) et personne ne savait vraiment ce qui allait se passer.. Lors de la manche qualificative, James Stewart allait passer Ryan Villopoto pour le gain de celle-ci.. C’était un signe définitif de la domination du numéro 7 Yamaha.. Environ 20 minutes avant la manche nous étions dans les étages de la semi Kawasaki en train de discuter avec Ryan Villopoto au sujet des essais et de son feeling pendant la soirée.. Ryan nous a dit qu’il avait encore quelques éléments à modifier et à changer pour la finale et nous dit de patienter et de voir le résultat.. Et ces fameuses choses à modifier ont visiblement marché puisque RV’ pris la tête rapidement devant Ivan Tedesco et enchaînera 20 tours sans aucune faille jusqu’au gain de la finale saisissant ainsi une première victoire surprenante pour cette ouverture de championnat.. Après la finale nous sommes allés discuter avec RV’ au sujet de celle-ci..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Ryan c’est une grande soirée pour toi, peux-tu nous en dire plus..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Oui merci, on peut parler de la manche qualificative déjà si tu veux.. Ca s’est pas mal passé pour moi, c’était bien.. J’ai fini par prendre un bon départ, j’ai mené quelques tours puis Stewart m’a passé.. J’ai commis quelques erreurs, il m’a passé mais cela a été aussi positif car j’ai pu me rendre compte où il bénéficiait de ces erreurs.. j’ai donc pu faire quelques ajustements et mieux rouler.. C’est à partir de là que j’ai eu une bonne opportunité dont je me suis servi par la suite..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Tu as donc appris des choses durant la manche qualificative et même si tu as fais second tu as su en tirer les bons points mais étais-tu toujours aussi confiant avant la finale..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Oh bien sûr j’ai appris des choses de cette course.. J’ai changé certaines choses comme sur ce triple à travers la ligne droite de départ, il coupait l’intérieur un peu plus vite que moi et sur ce triple au niveau de la troisième ligne de base il coupait devant moi plus vite l’intérieur et raccourcissait de ce fait son passage dans l’angle.. Des petites choses ici et là qui ne sont pas des changements, tu dois juste le suivre.. Tu penses juste « Oh il passe là et me passe.. » je pense que je vais y aller alors..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Durant toute l’inter-saison et aux dires de tous tu as semblé être à bloc sur l’entraînement et la préparation, je suppose que tu es content de voir qua ça paye..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : J’en suis super heureux bien sûr, cette soirée s’est déroulé parfaitement.. Saint Louis fût la dernière fois où j’ai roulé et ne s’est pas très bien terminé.. C’est une excellente façon de commencer l’année, on ne pouvait rêver mieux, vraiment.. Je n’ai jamais été dans cette position avant et la route est encore longue.. Il y a tellement de Pilotes rapides en finale, c’est hallucinant.. Ca va être une année difficile..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Comment était la piste..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Le terrain était bien mais avec la pluie que nous avons eu il y a quelques temps sa texture l’a rendu assez dur comme de la neige tassée et quand est arrivé la nuit, l’humidité est tombée et il s’est détérioré assez rapidement.. On pouvait voir des endroits brillants et les ornières se creuser de plus en plus..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : La semaine dernière sur « PulpMX » (un site web us..) le manager de Hart et Huntington a parlé de la manière dont Ivan Tedesco a réalisé le tour le plus rapide sur le circuit d’entraînement Kawasaki ce qui t’a poussé à téléphoner et démentir.. Est-ce que ses propos t’ont traversé l’esprit lorsqu’il fut devant toi ce soir..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : (Rires..) Non je n’y ai pas pensé.. Il a réalisé de bons départ dans la qualif’ et la finale.. Il roule mieux que jamais cette année et je ne sais pas trop à quelle place il a terminé (7 Ème..) mais il semble meilleur aujourd’hui..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : As-tu « marqué » les Pilotes comme lui sur la piste..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : J’ai pu voir Stewart ici et là et je savais où était Dungey.. J’ai conservé mon rythme sans toutefois m’attardé et en conservant mes poursuivants loin de moi.. L’un deux a été Mike Alessi et il m’a donné quelques problèmes pour le passer.. Donc oui de toute façon on s’est retrouvé ensemble à un moment avec Matt Boni et j’ai perdu un peu de temps mais j’ai finalement réussi à le sortir à la fin..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Quand on domine une course de cette manière durant le week-end, sur quoi va-t-on travailler la semaine qui suit..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Il y a beaucoup de choses sur quoi travailler.. Ma condition physique est bonne et j’en suis super heureux.. Il faut essayer de travailler un point et essayer de l’améliorer.. Tu connais les points forts et faibles de tes adversaires et ainsi dans le même temps tu connais les tiens.. C’est donc le même travail que d’habitude sauf que tu essaies de te sentir mieux et obtenir des victoires..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Est-ce que quelqu’un t’a surpris ce soir en positif ou négatif..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Pas vraiment, je savais que Trey Canard allait être rapide.. J’avais entendu dire qu’il allait bien et il l’a prouvé quelques fois ce soir.. Je sais qu’il va être là.. Peut-être pas chaque semaine mais de temps et temps.. C’est un bon Pilote..

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Tu m’as dit après les essais que tu allais garder quelque chose pour la finale et d’habitude vous les Pilotes gardez toujours quelque chose « en réserve » pour la finale..

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Je l’ai fait aussi mec..! Je ne peux pas tout dévoiler maintenant, je dois garder certaines choses top secrètes mec..!

Going into last night’s main event, the talk was all about the big four (Dungey, Reed, Stewart and Villopoto) and no one really knew what was going to happen. In the heat race, James Stewart caught and passed Ryan Villopoto and went on to win the heat. It was a definite display of domination by the number 7 Yamaha rider. About 20 minutes before that race I was upstairs in the Kawasaki truck talking to RV about his practice and how everything went. Ryan told me that he still had some tricks that he was going to pull out for the main event and that I should wait and see.

And they were pretty good tricks at that because RV grabbed the lead early on from Ivan Tedesco and sprinted away for the victory riding 20 flawless laps and grabbing a somewhat surprising opening race win. After the race, I caught up to RV to talk all about it.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Ryan, great night for you- can you talk about that dominating main event..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Yeah thanks and lets go back to the heat first. That went ok for me, it was good. I ended up getting a good start, led some laps and Stewie was catching me. I made some mistakes, he got by me but in a way it was good because I could see where he was gaining on me. I could make some adjustments and get better. So I had a good gate pick and I went from there.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : So you learned some things from the heat and even though you lost, were you still confident going into the main?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Oh for sure, I did learn some things from that race. I changed a few things like that one triple coming across the start straight, he was cutting inside a little quicker than me and then that triple on the third base line, he was cutting inside before me and shortening up the corner. Little things here and there that aren’t changes, you just have to follow him. You just think ‘Oh, he’s going there and caught me?” I guess I’ll go there then.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : You’ve continued your roll from the off-season where, by all accounts, you’ve been on fire in both the training and riding aspects. Got to be cool to see it pay off huh?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : I’m excited for sure, tonight went perfect. St Louis was the last time I raced and it didn’t end well. It’s a great way to start off the new year, couldn’t be any better really. I’ve never been in this position before and there’s a long way to go. There are so many fast guys in the main event, it’s ridiculous. It’s going to be a tough year.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : How was the track..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : The track was good but with all the rain we got a while ago, it was rutty yet kind of hard pack. And then when it got to be night time, the moisture started coming up and it then deteriorated really quickly. You could see the shiny spots and the ruts got deeper and deeper.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : So last week on the Pulpmx Show, H&H team manager spoke about how Ivan Tedesco had the faster lap time than you on the Kawasaki track which prompted you to call in and prove that wrong. Did any of that go through your head when IT was ahead of you?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : (Laughs) No, it didn’t actually. He got great starts and him and I in the heat and the main. He’s riding better than ever so far this year and I’m not sure where he finished but he’s looking much improved.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Were you marking those guys out there on the track at all..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : I could see Stewie here and there and I knew where Dungey was. I kept it the same but did get hung up with some lappers. One of them was Mike Alessi and he gave me some trouble out there to get around him. So yeah, anyways I got jacked up with him and Matt Boni and lost some time there but I managed to pull it out in the end.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : When you dominate a race like this from start to finish, what do you work on during the week..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : There are lots of things. My fitness is good, I’m excited about that. You just take it from here and try to get better. You know your competition’s weak points and strong points and as well, you know your own strengths and weaknesses at the same time. So it’s just business as usual and trying to get better and get some wins.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : Anyone surprise you good or bad tonight..?

RYAN VILLOPOTO : Not really, I knew Trey (Canard) was going to be fast. I had heard he was good and he threw some good times up there on the board. I know he’s going to be right there. Maybe not each and every week but for sure time to time. He’s a good rider.

PREMIERMOTOCROSS : You told me after practice that you were saving something for the main and usually you riders just make that up but it appears you did have something in reserve.

RYAN VILLOPOTO : I did man! I can’t show it all right away, I got to keep some things top secret man..!
